The Philippines greeted me with a mix of excitement and serenity as I landed on the island of Siargao, renowned for its laid-back vibes and world-class surf spots. Siargao, often called the surfing capital of the Philippines, is where the adventure truly began. The lush green landscapes and crystal-clear waters promised an unforgettable month of surfing, culture, and new experiences.
On my first day, I wasted no time. I headed straight to General Luna, the town that’s the heart of Siargao’s surf scene. Here, I rented a motorbike, the best way to get around the island, and cruised to my first surf spot: Cloud 9. Known for its powerful reef breaks, Cloud 9 draws surfers from all over the world, and I couldn’t wait to see why.
My first paddle out was met with a mix of nerves and excitement. The waves were challenging but exhilarating, with consistent swells rolling in off the Pacific. Despite a few wipeouts, the rush of catching my first wave in the Philippines was beyond satisfying. The reef break was intense but manageable, and I quickly understood why Cloud 9 is a must-visit for any serious surfer.
In the evening, I explored the island’s vibrant culture. Siargao is home to a tight-knit community of surfers and travellers, and the laid-back vibe is contagious. I found myself at a beachfront eatery enjoying fresh seafood, including kinilaw (a Filipino ceviche) and grilled fish, as I watched the sunset over the horizon. The locals are incredibly welcoming, and I felt an instant connection to the island’s spirit.
The first four days in the Philippines were all about immersing myself in the waves, the island lifestyle, and the warmth of its people. Siargao set the tone for what I knew would be an unforgettable month of surfing and exploration.
