Continuing my surfing adventure in Fiji, I dedicated the next four days to discovering some of the island’s lesser-known but equally impressive surf spots. These hidden gems provided unique challenges and unforgettable experiences.
Day 25: Discovering Frigates Passage On the twenty-fifth day, I ventured to Frigates Passage, a wave known for its powerful and long rides. Located about an hour’s boat ride from the main island, Frigates offers both left and right-handers, with waves that can reach up to 10 feet. The journey to the break was part of the adventure, as we navigated through pristine waters and past small islands. The waves were consistent and challenging, providing thrilling rides and the opportunity to carve and barrel. Frigates Passage quickly became one of my favorite spots in Fiji.
Day 26: Exploring Sigatoka Sand Dunes The next day, I explored the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, an area known for its unique landscape and excellent surf. The dunes, located on the southern coast of Viti Levu, offer a mix of beach and reef breaks. The waves were smaller but perfect for longboarding and practicing new manoeuvres. The setting was stunning, with rolling sand dunes providing a dramatic backdrop to the clear blue waves. After surfing, I took a hike through the dunes, enjoying the panoramic views of the coastline and the sense of solitude.
Day 27: Surfing Hideaways On the twenty-seventh day, I headed to Hideaways, a reef break located near the Coral Coast. This spot is popular with both locals and visitors for its fun, rippable waves and relaxed vibe. The waves at Hideaways were playful, offering plenty of opportunities for turns and tricks. The break was less crowded, allowing for longer rides and a more laid-back session. After surfing, I explored the nearby village, meeting locals and learning about their way of life. The sense of community and the friendly atmosphere made Hideaways a special place to surf.
Day 28: Finding Secret Spots The final day of this segment was dedicated to finding secret surf spots with the help of a local guide. We explored lesser-known breaks along the coastline, each offering unique challenges and pristine conditions. From secluded beaches with perfect waves to hidden reef breaks accessible only by boat, the day was filled with discoveries. The highlight was finding a remote break with glassy, head-high waves and no crowds. The thrill of surfing in such untouched beauty was unmatched, and it was a perfect way to conclude this part of my adventure.
Conclusion: These four days of chasing perfect waves and discovering hidden gems were a testament to Fiji’s diverse and incredible surf scene. From the powerful waves of Frigates Passage to the playful breaks at Hideaways and the secluded secret spots, each location offered unique experiences and challenges. The pristine waters, stunning landscapes, and the sense of discovery made this part of my journey truly special. As I continue to explore Fiji, I am excited to find even more perfect waves and hidden treasures in this island paradise.
