As my surfing adventure in Lombok enters its third week, I’ve learned that chasing swells is both an art and a science. With each passing day, I’ve honed my skills in reading surf forecasts, scouting the best breaks, and maximizing my time in the water. Join me as I share the tips and insights gleaned from days 15 to 19 of my month-long surfing odyssey in Lombok.
Day 15: Surf Forecast Analysis
On day 15, I kicked off the week by analysing the surf forecast for Lombok. By studying swell charts, wind patterns, and tide information, I gained valuable insights into the upcoming conditions and identified the best breaks to target. Armed with this knowledge, I set my sights on the waves that promised the best ride potential for the day ahead.
Day 16: Dawn Patrol at Desert Point
As the sun rose on day 16, I embarked on a dawn patrol session at Desert Point—a legendary surf break known for its long, hollow left-hand barrels. Paddling out into the lineup in the early morning light, I felt a sense of anticipation building within me. As the first waves of the day rolled in, I positioned myself for the ride of a lifetime, carving through the barrels with precision and skill.
Day 17: Exploring Secret Spots
Venturing off the beaten path on day 17, I set out to explore some of Lombok’s hidden surf gems. With the help of local guides and fellow surfers, I discovered secluded coves, deserted beaches, and pristine breaks tucked away from the crowds. Paddling out into the lineup at these secret spots, I revelled in the solitude and serenity of the ocean, catching wave after wave in blissful isolation.
Day 18: Adaptive Surfing
As the week progressed, I encountered changing surf conditions that required adaptability and flexibility. With shifting winds and varying swell directions, I adjusted my approach to match the ever-evolving conditions. By staying agile and responsive in the water, I was able to make the most of each session and capitalize on the waves that came my way.
Day 19: Sunset Sessions at Selong Belanak
As the sun began to set on day 19, I made my way to Selong Belanak—a picturesque beach known for its gentle rolling waves and stunning sunsets. Paddling out into the lineup as the golden hues of dusk painted the sky, I felt a sense of peace and tranquillity wash over me. Catching wave after wave against the backdrop of the setting sun, I savoured the magical moments shared with fellow surfers as we rode the waves into the night.
As I reflect on the past five days in Lombok, I’m reminded of the importance of adaptability, preparation, and perseverance in chasing swells and making the most of each surfing adventure. With one more week of exploration ahead, I look forward to applying these lessons learned and continuing to chase waves in this tropical paradise.
