The adventure of a lifetime kicked off as I touched down in Lisbon, the first stop on my 12-month global surfing escapade. With a surfboard in hand and the Atlantic calling my name, I set out to explore the waves, culture, and hidden gems that Portugal had in store.

Day 1: The Heartbeat of Lisbon

My journey began in the vibrant heart of Lisbon. The cobbled streets echoed with the rhythm of Fado music, and the aroma of pastĂ©is de nata filled the air. Eager to feel the ocean’s embrace, I headed to Carcavelos Beach, a golden stretch of sand just a stone’s throw away from the city.

As I paddled out into the azure waters, I was greeted by friendly locals and seasoned surfers, each sharing tales of their favourite breaks and the unique charm of Lisbon’s surf scene. The waves at Carcavelos proved to be the perfect introduction—consistent and inviting, setting the stage for the surfing adventures that awaited me.

Day 2: Surfing Sunsets in Cascais

Cascais, a picturesque seaside town, beckoned me on day two. The waves at Guincho Beach were a surfer’s dream, with the Atlantic swell providing an exhilarating ride. After a day of carving through the waves, I couldn’t resist exploring the historic streets of Cascais. The vibrant colors of the buildings mirrored the hues of the ocean, creating a seamless blend of nature and architecture.

As the sun began its descent, casting a warm glow over the cliffs, I found myself mesmerized by the beauty that surrounded me. Surfing had not only introduced me to the thrill of the waves but also unveiled the stunning landscapes that Portugal had to offer.

Day 3: Hidden Coves and Seaside Charm

Yearning for a quieter surf experience, I ventured to Praia da Ursa, a hidden gem nestled between towering cliffs. The trek to the beach was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow paths that opened up to breath-taking vistas of the Atlantic. With only a handful of surfers dotting the shoreline, it felt like I had discovered a secret paradise.

The waves at Praia da Ursa were a dance of grace and power, and the rugged coastline added a touch of untamed beauty to the experience. After an invigorating surf session, I spent the afternoon exploring the nearby town of Sintra, its historic architecture and lush forests providing a stark contrast to the raw energy of the waves.

Day 4: Lisbon’s Urban Surf Vibes

Returning to Lisbon for my final day in the area, I decided to explore the urban surf scene that often goes unnoticed. Costa da Caparica, just a short ferry ride from the city, offered a unique blend of cityscape and surf. The beach was alive with surf schools, beach bars, and the unmistakable sound of waves crashing against the shore.

In the afternoon, I strolled through the historic neighbourhoods of Alfama and Bairro Alto, immersing myself in Lisbon’s rich culture. From ancient castles to vibrant street art, every corner held a story waiting to be discovered. As the day transitioned into night, I found myself reminiscing about the incredible experiences and surf sessions that had defined my first four days in Portugal.
