It’s impossible to visit Paris and not be awestruck by the Eiffel Tower. As I stood beneath its massive iron structure, looking up into the sky, I finally understood why it’s more than just a landmark—it’s a symbol of France’s identity, resilience, and artistic innovation.
Originally built as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair, the Eiffel Tower was meant to be temporary. Gustave Eiffel and his engineers faced plenty of criticism at the time; many Parisians thought it was an eyesore. Today, of course, it’s one of the most recognisable and celebrated structures in the world.
Standing at 330 metres tall (with antennas), it held the title of the tallest man-made structure in the world until the Chrysler Building took that honour in 1930. But height aside, it’s the design—the exposed iron lattice work and the elegant curves—that makes the Eiffel Tower such a marvel to see up close.
A Different Experience at Every Level
I decided to take the stairs to the second level instead of the lift. Tough on the legs, but worth every step. As you ascend, the perspective of Paris changes gradually—its rooftops, gardens, and wide boulevards stretch out in an organised maze below.
At the summit, the view is breathtaking. I arrived just before sunset, and as the city lights slowly flickered on, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. There’s something timeless and moving about watching the City of Light come to life from this iconic vantage point.
More Than Just a Tower
What many people don’t realise is that the Eiffel Tower also has restaurants, historical exhibitions, and even a champagne bar at the top. It’s not just a monument—it’s an experience. I grabbed a coffee on the second floor and browsed through the displays showing how the tower was constructed, and how it’s maintained today.
By night, the tower transforms into something almost magical. Every hour on the hour, it sparkles with thousands of lights for five minutes. I watched it from across the Seine, surrounded by other travellers and locals, and no one said a word—we were all simply in awe.
Final Thought
France has many architectural wonders, but the Eiffel Tower stands above them all—literally and symbolically. It represents engineering brilliance and cultural pride, and for me, it marked the beginning of my unforgettable journey through the heart of France. If you ever get the chance to see it, do more than just take a photo—immerse yourself in the story it tells.
