Day 5: Venturing to Matareva Beach

After an incredible start to my adventure, I set my sights on Matareva Beach, a spot recommended by the locals as one of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches on Upolu. Located on the southern coast, Matareva is less frequented by tourists, making it the perfect place to escape and find uncrowded waves.

The day began with a leisurely drive through the heart of Upolu, passing vibrant green fields and charming villages along the way. When I arrived at Matareva, I was struck by the sheer beauty of the place. The beach was pristine, with soft white sand and clear, turquoise water. The waves here were smaller than those at Aganoa, making it a great spot to practice some manoeuvres and enjoy the scenery.

The highlight of the day was surfing in such a serene environment. With only a few other surfers in the water, I had plenty of space to myself. The waves were gentle and fun, allowing me to relax and take in the stunning surroundings. After a few hours in the water, I spent the rest of the day lounging on the beach, feeling completely at peace.

Day 6: Exploring the Hidden Surf Spots of Lefaga Bay

Continuing my exploration of Samoa’s southern coast, I decided to head west towards Lefaga Bay, an area known for its beautiful beaches and hidden surf spots. The journey took me through dense rainforests and along coastal roads that offered breath-taking views of the ocean.

Lefaga Bay is home to several surf breaks, each offering something unique. I spent the morning surfing at Return to Paradise Beach, named after the famous 1953 movie that was filmed here. The waves were fast and punchy, breaking over a shallow reef, which made for some thrilling rides. The scenery was equally impressive, with lush vegetation meeting the ocean’s edge.

In the afternoon, I ventured further along the coast to find a more secluded spot. I stumbled upon a small beach with perfect right-handers peeling along the reef. With no one else around, I had the waves all to myself. It was a magical experience, surfing in such a pristine and untouched environment.

Day 7: A Day of Culture and Connection in Apia

After several days of intense surfing, I decided to take a break from the waves and immerse myself in Samoa’s rich culture. I headed to Apia, the capital city, where I spent the day exploring its vibrant markets, historical sites, and cultural centres.

The markets were a feast for the senses, filled with the colours and aromas of fresh produce, handicrafts, and local delicacies. I enjoyed chatting with the vendors and learning about traditional Samoan foods and crafts. Later, I visited the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, the former home of the famous author who spent his final years in Samoa. The museum offered a fascinating glimpse into his life and the history of the island.

In the evening, I attended a traditional fiafia night, where I experienced the energetic and captivating performances of Samoan dancers and fire-knife dancers. The night was filled with music, dance, and delicious Samoan food, giving me a deeper appreciation for the island’s culture and traditions.

Day 8: Sunrise Surf Session at Tafatafa Beach

Feeling refreshed and inspired by my cultural day in Apia, I was eager to get back in the water. I made my way to Tafatafa Beach, another gem on Upolu’s southern coast. I arrived just as the sun was rising, casting a warm golden light over the ocean. The early morning conditions were perfect, with glassy waves rolling in and no wind to disturb the surface.

The waves at Tafatafa were long and playful, providing the perfect canvas for some stylish turns and cutbacks. The beach itself was stunning, with powdery white sand and crystal-clear water. After a few hours of surfing, I took a break to explore the surrounding area, finding hidden coves and rock pools teeming with marine life.

As I wrapped up my session, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences I’d had so far. Samoa’s southern coastline had delivered in every way, offering incredible waves, stunning scenery, and a deep connection to the island’s culture. I was already looking forward to what the next leg of my adventure would bring.
